Hon'ble Mr. Justice Umesh C. Banerjee
Justice Umesh C. Banerjee, son of Late Nalin Chandra Banerjee, a very eminent Criminal and Constitutional lawyer of Calcutta, after graduation from Scottish Church College went to England for Bar Course. He was called to the Bar from Inner Temple, London in December, 1964. He joined Calcutta Bar as a Barrister in early 1965 and had practised both in Original and Appellate Side of the Calcutta High Court with distinction till early January, 1984 when he was elevated to the Bench. Justice Banerjee, apart from being the Presiding Judge of the Environment Bench at the Calcutta High Court, was the Presiding Judge of the Principal Appellate Bench (Original Side) in the Calcutta High Court.
Justice Banerjee was one of the founder Council Members of SAARC Law and presently is the President, SAARC Law (India Chapter). At his initiation an International Conference "FORUM OF JUDGES-87" on protection of Intellectual Property Rights, did take place in 1987 in the City of Calcutta in association with World Intellectual Property Organisation (one of U.N. Agencies)
Justice Banerjee is a Member of International Law Association and participated as a delegate at various International Conferences. He is also a Speaker of W.I.P.O. Justice Banerjee is the Chairman of Society of Law & Justice, Calcutta Chapter. Justice Banerjee has had various publications to his credit.
Incidentally, Justice Banerjee is well-known in the Aviation Industry of the country and chaired 2 (two) Courts of Enquiry, ordered by the Central Government; one in regard to Vayudoot Crash near Gauhati in 1989 and another Indian Airlines Aircraft Crash at Imphal in 1991.
Justice Banerjee has been, until recently, a Member of Ravi-Beas Water Dispute Tribunal. Justice Banerjee is an has also been a Governing Council Member of National Law School University at Bangalore. Justice Banerjee is the Founder President of the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research, a Law University at Hyderabad (NALSAR) and presently a Governing Council Member of the University.
Justice Banerjee was appointed as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh on 1st February, 1998 and elevated to the Bench of the Supreme Court on 9th December, 1998.
