Justice D.P. Mohapatra

     Mr. Justice D.P. Mohapatra was born on 3rd August, 1937, at Cuttack in the State of Orissa, in a family of lawyers. His grand father Late Shri Baikunth Mohapatra was a lawyer. His father Late Shri Souri Prasad Mohapatra was a leading civil lawyer who was later appointed as Judge of the Orissa High Court.

    Mr. Justice Mohapatra had his schooling in the Ravenshaw Colligiate School at Cuttack and the Madras Christian College High School at Madras. He did his graduation from the Ewing Christian College at Allahabad. He studied law in the Madhusudan Law College at Cuttack.

    After joining the legal profession Mr. Justice D.P. Mohapatra practised in Constitutional, Civil and Criminal side in the Orissa High Court. He worked as Additional Standing Counsel, Government of Orissa, as Standing Counsel of the Transport Department, as Additional Government Advocate and as the Government Advocate till 18th November, 1983 when he was appointed as a permanent Judge of the Orissa High Court. He was appointed as acting Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court from May 1995. He assumed office as the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court with effect from 16th February, 1996. He was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on 9th December, 1998. Retired on 3.8.2002.
